Traffic Characteristics of Bulk Data Transfer using TCP/IP over Gigabit Ethernet

چکیده
As network data rates scale-up, an understanding of how and why traffic characteristics change is needed. We study the characteristics of bulk data transfer TCP/IP flows in a fully-switched Gigabit Ethernet network. Both disk-to-disk and memory-to-memory transfers are studied. We investigate flow characteristics as a function of link speed, server load, operating system (Linux and WindowsNT), and number of simultaneous clients accessing a server. Using trace-based simulations, we find that there is great variability in the “friendliness” of a flow to a single-server queue in terms of packet losses. Flows on Gigabit Ethernet tend to cause greater packet losses for a given link utilization and buffer size under certain conditions. We also find some unexplained inefficiencies in some of the flows. We investigate methods of application-level traffic smoothing to improve flow characteristics. A prototype packet-spacing socket send function is developed to reduce packet losses.

Sockets vs RDMA Interface over 10-Gigabit Networks: An In-depth analysis of the Memory Traffic Bottleneck
The compute requirements associated with the TCP/IP protocol suite have been previously studied by a number of researchers. However, the recently developed 10-Gigabit Networks such as 10Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand have added a new dimension of complexity to this problem, Memory Traffic. While there have been previous studies which show the implications of the memory traffic bottleneck, to t...
متن کاملQuality of Service on Gigabit Ethernet for Event Builder
Congestion avoidance techniques for event builders using switching network technologies is a major issue. Traffic management of the data flow is an essential point to avoid congestion. Global traffic control is one of the mechanisms to manage the traffic. It uses global information of the switching network. While, traffic shaping technique is another mechanism not to use them. Quality of Servic...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Gigabit Ethernet and Myrinet for System-Area-Networks
Low latency and high bandwidth networking is essential for cluster computing and System-Area-Networks (SAN). The performance of a SAN optimized interconnect, Myrinet, is compared with gigabit Ethernet running TCP/IP. Though Myrinet has lower latencies and higher throughput than gigabit Ethernet, it is found that an efficient implementation of message passing interface library over TCP/IP achiev...
متن کاملIp Storage Working Group
The IP Storage Working group is chartered with developing a protocol to transport the Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) protocol over the internet. The iSCSI protocol will define a mapping of SCSI transport protocol over TCP/IP so that SCSI storage controllers (principally disk and tape arrays and libraries) can be attached to IP networks, notably Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10 Gigabit Eth...
متن کاملEnabling High Performance Data Transfer on Cluster Architecture
In this article, we present some results on the communication performance of TCP/IP in a cluster of Pentium based workstations connected by a Gigabit Ethernet network. The experiments were performed in order to identify the bottlenecks in the communication protocol stack. We outline our performance measurements and suggest means to improve the overall performance of TCP/IP. Finally, we present ...
